New Role Rumors: The Promised Land
I’ve been keenly eyeing news on John Hillcoat’s potential adaptation of The Wettest County in the World, scripted by Nick Cave based on the novel by Matt Bondurant. There’s been significant maybe/hopefully casting news for the film so far, but not much more. Hillcoat seems to have Shia LaBeouf and Ryan Gosling interested and/or attached, and there was word that other actors, like Scarlett Johansson and Michael Shannon, were interested. Now, based on some art from the American Film Market, it appears that the leading female role will go, in an ideal world, to Amy Adams. And the film may just have a slightly shorter and more generic title: The Promised Land.

Amy Adams’ Ten Best Days
Amy Adams is turning producer on her next project. The breakout star of Junebug, who’s since gone on to bowl us over in Julie and Julia, Enchanted and Doubt, is clearly fan enough of Adena Halpern’s novel My Ten Best Days that she wants to oversee its journey to the screen. That or she knows a starring role when she sees one.
The novel is set in the afterlife: specifically Heaven, which is structured into seven levels, of which the seventh is the most desirable (meaning you can eat what you like and never get fat). Main character Alex wants to stay there with her Uncle Morris and her grandparents, in a perfect house that never needs cleaning, but is in danger of being demoted unless she can provide evidence of having lived a worthwhile life. Hence her homework essay on her ten best days.
Now, we’re slightly bummed to learn that Heaven a) has a hierarchy, b) involves homework and exams, and c) means you have to live in the same house as your relatives. There are also echoes of What Dreams May Come and The Lovely Bones, but this will clearly be far more lightweight than either, and on that level could be fun. Heaven portrayed as a kind of Tim Burton 1950s suburbia, for example, could give this the slightly spiky edges it’ll need to avoid just being twee.
Josh Klausner, who used to direct second unit for the Farrelly Brothers before turning to writing (he’s been working on Shrek Forever After) is writing the script, and Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) is tipped to direct. Hopefully that’s a team that knows how to aim for the funny and hold back on the cloying.

First Look: The Fighter

From acclaimed director David O. Russell (Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings) comes THE FIGHTER, the powerful true story of professional boxers Dickie (Christian Bale) and Micky (Academy Award Nominee
Mark Wahlberg). Although they are half brothers, their careers take very different courses. Older brother Dickie does not suffer fro ma shortage of talent or confidence, but his lack of judgment and humility lead him down a path of self-destruction. After blowing his shot against one of the greatest fighters of his generation, Dickie descends down a dangerous road of drug addiction that robs him of his career, alienates his brother, and eventually lands him in jail. Meanwhile, discouraged from yet another defeat, younger brother Micky, whose talent never seems to match the size of his heart, vanishes into early retirement. But his itch to fight never goes away, and when a rehabilitated Dickie is released from prison and takes over as Micky’s trainer, Micky transforms himself from an underdog into a world champion prized pugilist.

Galifianakis and Adams Moving Into ‘Town House’
A new project is in the works for Amy looks like :)
Rarely has a rough night of drinking paid off so well. Zach Galifianakis, breakout star of ‘The Hangover’ and HBO’s ‘Bored to Death,’ is close to signing on to headline in ‘Town House’ alongside Amy Adams (‘Julie and Julia’), according to report from Variety.
Doug Wright and ‘Once’ writer-director John Carney have adapted the screenplay from Tish Cohen’s comical debut
novel for Fox 2000, and have been trying to build ‘Town House’ into a feature since 2007, only to be torpedoed by the writers’ strike that year. Ridley and Tony Scott are producing the flick, and hoping to get started next summer. The story revolves around an agoraphobic New Englander who lives in a historic-but-crumbling building with his teenage son. He has to start dealing with adulthood as the royalties from his late rock-star dad start drying up. Into the picture comes a friendly call girl, one of several oddball types passing through the house.
Our take: ‘Town House’ has the potential to be ‘About a Boy’ meets ‘Pretty Woman’ — but with wicked good Boston accents and more facial hair.
