Hollywood Notebook: Amy Adams

Found a short article about Amy this morning. Love the quote about looking like a girl who couldn’t punch.

Most of Amy Adams’ roles have been likable characters, none more than Giselle in “Enchanted.” It’s easy to cast her in such parts; she does look like the sweet girl next door.

A steady diet of such roles can make an actor anxious.

So when director David O. Russell heard Adams was looking for grittier parts, he thought of her for his new film, “The Fighter.” He cast her as Charlene, the spirited girlfriend to Mark Wahlberg’s character.

The director had one concern.

“When I got the role, David informed me that I looked like a girl who couldn’t punch,” Adams says. “Which made me want to punch him.”

Being able to handle herself in a fight was important because there’s one scene where Charlene beats the curls off of a young woman who keeps insulting her. To prepare for the scene, Adams took a couple of boxing lessons.

“I didn’t want to hurt the girl that I was fighting with,” Adams says. “When I was younger, my sister thought it was funny to pretend to punch me in the face. … So I’ve always been a little afraid of fake punches.”
