Allure talked to Amy’s hairstylist about how to achieve the perfect updo look for the red carpet.
There’s a fine line when it comes to award-show updos: too stiff, and it merits prom comparisons; too loose, and you’re a bobby-pin-slip away from a red-carpet disaster. Amy Adams’s Golden Globes hairstyle struck the perfect balance. “It’s all about getting the right texture so that the hair holds,” said Laini Reeves, co-owner of Essensuals London Salon in L.A., who did Adams’s hair for the big event. “We went for a soft, 1920s look.”
Reeves asked Adams (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Fighter) to shampoo and condition her hair, so it was air-drying when she arrived. “Amy has an extraordinary amount of hair that has a nice, natural wave, so I put a little of Moroccanoil’s Hydrating Styling Cream in it while it was drying,” Reeves explained. “The cream keeps the hair from being too clean and slippery.” She let Adams’s hair air-dry the whole way, except for the roots—she used a blow-dryer there. Then she wrapped medium-size sections around the barrel of a 1-inch curling iron. She loosely braided the hair, leaving a few pieces out to frame Adams’s face. “I rolled the end of the braid over until it reached the nape of her neck,” Reeves said, using only “about five thick bobby pins” to secure the style. For the two hanging pieces, Reeves pin-curled them in “S” shapes to create a pretty bend, then misted Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray all over. As Reeves put it, “Amy was on cloud nine!”
