Mike Sragow talks Amy

Mike Sragow (a writer, film critic, and featured blogger at The Baltimore Sun) wrote a wonderful entry where he discusses Meryl, Amy, and “Ugh, Leap Year“.  It’s a great read so after you check out the blurb below, I highly suggest clicking here to read the full post.

Finding the fresh response in obvious situations has become a specialty for Adams. She broke through with Junebug (2005) as a never-say-die beauty with a a baby on the way and a brooding high-school sweetheart for a husband. But Adams had already been breaking hearts and igniting laughs simultaneously for half a decade, starting with the 1999 beauty-pageant parody Drop Dead Gorgeous. (She plays the contestant who says, “They’re never going to let you perform naked — I asked!”) And her bloom hasn’t wilted under her recent klieg-lit stardom.

Amy still channels Giselle

… despite moving on to more serious roles since the movie, Adams sometimes finds herself lapsing back into the sugary-sweet character.

She says, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain to little girls, ‘Shhh, I’m in disguise!’

“One time I was at an airport and I was spotted by an adorable three year old. I thought I’d ruined her life. She looked at me as if to say, ‘You’re not Gisele!’ I thought, ‘I can’t be responsible for her loss of faith,’ so I told her in my Gisele voice that I was in disguise so that Queen Narissa (evil witch) couldn’t find me. And she was like, ‘Oooh!’”

No longer ‘Miss Innocent’

“Am I asexual? I don’t present myself to the world like: everyone has to see my bits. But I wouldn’t call myself prudish by any means.”

Amy Adams is most famous for playing wide-eyed innocents whose sunny outlook enriches the lives of those around her. Just think of toothy Brenda in Catch Me If You Can, heavily pregnant Ashley in Junebug and, of course, Giselle the misplaced princess in 2007′s modern twist on a Disney fairytale, Enchanted. In fact, when Adams announced in December that she was pregnant by fiancé Darren Le Gallo, commentators expressed surprise that someone so “wholesome and pure” had ever actually had sex.

Hearing this, Adams looks taken aback for a second. “I’m not sure how I feel about that,” she laughs awkwardly, looking perplexed as she leans back in her chair in the luxury of the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. “Am I asexual? I don’t present myself to the world like: everyone has to see my bits. But I wouldn’t call myself prudish by any means.”

The thing is, in this age of Megan Fox-style sexuality-as-a-weapon, Adams’s attitude is actually quite rare, and that’s what makes her attractive to men and relatable to women. “There are a lot of women out there like me,” she nods. “I think it’s something that’s more fun to discover than to put out there.”

First thoughts on ‘The Fighter’

Amy’s upcoming movie The Fighter doesn’t have a release date yet but things are moving forward on production. Test screenings have begun and here is what one lucky viewer had to say about Amy.

Amy Adams appears as Mickey Ward’s girlfriend (and eventual wife) Charlene. This was a fine turn for the actress who many first noticed in the Disney flick Enchanted. She was delightful in that film and she’s gritty in this one. Charlene is a sexy, tough, broad. Adams isn’t in this role for the glamor. Charlene isn’t a Disney princess. Seeing Amy Adams throw back a shot of whiskey, punch a girl in the nose, and call a bar patron a “cheap fuck”, makes my heart jump the way Micky’s must have. She is a man’s woman!

If you’re interested in reading the rest of his thoughts on the film in its unfinished state, you can go here. Be warned thought – there are some spoilers.

Cute new Amy interview

I guess if that’s the most salacious thing they can dig up then I’m doing OK.

With a baby on the way, ‘Leap Year’ actress Amy Adams says she is doing “pretty good.”

“I’m surprised how tired I get. I’ve learned that when you get tired, you need to lie down and have a cookie,” she tells PopEater.

And when she’s resting, she can’t help but watch ‘Law and Order: SVU’ marathons. “Even if you know you’ve seen the episode before, you know at some point Chris Meloni is going to take his shirt off and that’s always good,” Adams adds.

Amy talks ‘Leap Year’, baby, and more

The key line for me is that “I realize I had everything I wanted, but nothing I really needed.” That’s one of the lines that attracted me to the role. I’ve definitely been at that point in my life.

The last place Amy Adams expected to run into the paparazzi was Target.

The aggressive photographers usually stalk celebrities outside trendy shops on Melrose Avenue and Rodeo Drive.

So, imagine the redhead’s surprise when a paparazzo poked his head through a rack of children’s clothes at a Los Angeles-area Target, and snapped a few candid shots of the actress as she shopped at what she describes as her “favorite store.”

Such is the life of one of Hollywood’s hottest actresses, whose new romantic comedy “Leap Year” opens Friday.

Amy Adams’ Ten Best Days

Amy Adams is turning producer on her next project. The breakout star of Junebug, who’s since gone on to bowl us over in Julie and Julia, Enchanted and Doubt, is clearly fan enough of Adena Halpern’s novel My Ten Best Days that she wants to oversee its journey to the screen. That or she knows a starring role when she sees one.

The novel is set in the afterlife: specifically Heaven, which is structured into seven levels, of which the seventh is the most desirable (meaning you can eat what you like and never get fat). Main character Alex wants to stay there with her Uncle Morris and her grandparents, in a perfect house that never needs cleaning, but is in danger of being demoted unless she can provide evidence of having lived a worthwhile life. Hence her homework essay on her ten best days.

Now, we’re slightly bummed to learn that Heaven a) has a hierarchy, b) involves homework and exams, and c) means you have to live in the same house as your relatives. There are also echoes of What Dreams May Come and The Lovely Bones, but this will clearly be far more lightweight than either, and on that level could be fun. Heaven portrayed as a kind of Tim Burton 1950s suburbia, for example, could give this the slightly spiky edges it’ll need to avoid just being twee.

Josh Klausner, who used to direct second unit for the Farrelly Brothers before turning to writing (he’s been working on Shrek Forever After) is writing the script, and Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) is tipped to direct. Hopefully that’s a team that knows how to aim for the funny and hold back on the cloying.

Becoming Amy

Amy was featured in American Way Magazine in August of this year. I have added some photos from the website to the gallery and you can read part of the interview below.

How Amy Adams went from being a small-town girl to being one of the most sought-after starlets of her generation.

Her friends call her by her full name, Amy Lou, and there’s no other name more fitting for her. True, such a down-home name doesn’t, at first, seem to befit the blazing red-haired screen siren we know as Amy Adams (though, in the spirit of full disclosure, her hair is naturally blonde). It sounds more suitable for someone like the wide-eyed Southern-sweetheart character Adams played in the 2005 indie film Junebug than for the actress who played her on the big screen and was then nominated for an Academy Award for her honest portrayal. But underneath the blockbuster beauty, the accolades, and the fame, Adams is still Amy Lou, the sweet-natured, small-town girl with strong morals from Castle Rock, Colorado.

Adams grew up the middle child in a family of seven children. She and her siblings were raised Mormon until she was 12, at which point her parents divorced and the family left the church. Her father was a military man who moved with his family from base to base until they settled, at least long enough for Adams to graduate from high school, in Colorado. Her mother was an amateur bodybuilder who worked at a gym. Adams herself worked at the Gap and even did a short stint at Hooters. It was hardly glamorous.

LA Times article about Amy

That Amy Adams Touch

Amy Adams has a smile that plays big, taking over her face, then the room, then everyone in it. It’s as if the world is suddenly bathed in sunshine. That’s why it’s hard to imagine anyone else as the dipped-in-happiness princess of “Enchanted,” a cartoon character come to life, who sings and sews her way into Patrick Dempsey’s heart.

But as wonderful as that super-saturated optimism can be, and as much as Hollywood suits and moviegoers alike prefer her in those roles, she is even more interesting to watch as someone who’s been hurt, betrayed by life or circumstance or someone else. Those finely textured performances have a way of surprising you, so unexpected do they feel, so unlike the lightness of her comedy.

Box office: ‘Julie & Julia’

Inspired by the Hasbro action figure, Paramount’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra took command of the weekend box office with a $56.2 million debut domestically, according to studio estimates Sunday. G.I. Joe also took in $44.3 million overseas for a worldwide total of $100.5 million.

Meryl Streep’s Julia Child tale Julie & Julia opened a solid No. 2 as an alternative for adult crowds with $20.1 million. While G.I. Joe was the first choice for young males, women 35 and older were the main audience for Julie & Julia.

As for reviews of the film… the majority of them are favorable with Rotten Tomatoes listing it as 76% fresh.  Most critics are saying that Amy’s part of the movie, the Julie half, isn’t as strong as the Julia part.  To be clear though, most are not saying it’s Amy’s fault – it is Meryl after all and she just nails the part as she always does.  Hard to compete with that lol.
